OBJECTIVE

To expand my knowledge, communicate, entertain, and participate in the global movement toward peace, love, human rights and social justice, through words and music.

Fluent in Western musical styles including jazz, classical, blues, rock, Ska, etc.

Experienced in various types of ethnic musics including Klezmer, Afro-Venezuelan, Chilean and Andean. Also some acquaintance with Balkan, Arabic, African, Indian, Afro-Cuban, and Brazilian music.

MIDI composer & arranger, computer music programmer and loop artist; owner of small independent recording studio and label.

Horn section arranging and overdubbing in the studio, vocals.

Familiar with all aspects of music production, composing, arranging, performing, sightreading, session work, bandleading, contracting, teaching, studying, practicing, touring, performing, songwriting, and hauling equipment.

EDUCATION

Studied with Joe Henderson, Steve Coleman, Ali Akbar Khan, Larry Schneider, Mark Levine, George Brooks, Kenny Hitchcock, Victor Morosco, Greg Dufford, Hal Stein, Mel Martin, Nora Nusbaum and others.  Majored in Music at San Francisco State University.

EXPERIENCE

2004 - 2008:  recording and performing across North and South America with the world music group Quijeremá.

2002 - 2008:  recording, performing and creating original music and videos with earRotator.

1987- 2008:  recording and performing concerts, weddings & bar mitzvahs in the San Francisco bay area with Klezmania of San Francisco.

2007 - 2008:  recording and performing with jazz group Fortune Smiles.

2001:  Released CD with Rafael Manriquez with the poetry of Pablo Neruda, set to music with compositions by Rafael and Dave.

1999: Released independently produced CD "House Music: a collection of jazz standards and originals".

1990s: Wrote original compositions performed by the Oakland Opera Theater.  Wrote some dance music for choreographer Sylvia Baeza.

Bands/musical organizations Dave has worked with:  earRotator, Quijeremá, Klezmania of San Francisco, Fortune Smiles, Rafael Manriquez, and his own groups including a jazz and world music quartet which included Jack Gates, guitar, Kevin Mummey, drums, and Ari Munkres, bass.  Wrote music for, and conducted, an opera which was also written by Tom Dean of Oakland Opera Theater,  a play by Federico Garcia Lorca entitled "Asi que Pasen Cinco Aņos" (Once Five Years Pass).  Played saxophone with Undercover SKA, 1995 - 96. Toured with The Klezmorim in Europe, 1993. Other musical organizations I've worked with:  Nitza, Pure Honey, New Geography, Big Bones and the Bonafides, Sirba, Klezmania of San Francisco, The Underworld Opera Company, Dave Barrows Jazz Trio, Lucy Nuff, Maximum Wage, the Dave Barrows Band, Shambala, David Hardiman's Big Band, Los Compas, Slice of Brazil, Fulani, Monica Pasqual Band, Stone Groove Sax Quartet, RadioVision, Rakshasa, Blue Swing, Opera at CCSF (Kurt Weill's Mahagonny), various school groups, countless jam sessions and free-lance gigs.

Session work: CDs with Rafael Manriquez, Quique Cruz, many others. Played on guitarist Jack Gates CD "New Geography". Sirba's album "The Wailing Wall"; Monica de Calixto (Chilean pop star); La Ley (Chilean rock band); Chris Millner (avant-garde composer); horn section overdubbing for Underworld Opera Company's production "Close Your Mind and Kiss Me"; plus countless demo tape sessions.

Radio work: Joel ben Izzy, Traveling Storyteller; KQED's "West Coast Weekend."

Film scoring: "Bloodthirsty" (horror film); "Instants" (video documentary).

Music for CD-ROM Composed music for hit CD-ROM game LEGO ISLAND by Mindscape (this game is in the Smithsonian Institution!).  Composed music for an children's CD-ROM game for Flying-Rhino Productions.

Original music video: "Palatial estates" (1989).  See also earRotator.
